Memory foam is a resilient material. It can indent and get back to its normal position many times over without suffering permanent damage.
Quality memory foam mattresses can easily last 8-10 years before they show any permanent indentations (sagging).
Memory foam toppers however don’t last as long. You’ll probably need to buy a new one after 2-5 years depending on various factors.
The reduced lifespan of toppers is mostly because they are thinner and don’t have a dense foam base like memory foam mattresses.
So they are affected more by weight and frequent use.
Factors that determine how long a memory foam mattress topper lasts
1. Topper quality
The main factor that determines the longevity of your topper is its quality. A topper made from poor quality memory foam won’t be as resilient and can start wearing out in a matter of months.
A high quality topper on the other hand can last for years while still in good shape.
When you are shopping for a topper, avoid cheap low quality brands. Instead, buy from well trusted brands that are known for quality. Also check customer reviews to see what users have to say about the topper’s durability.
2. Thickness
Thicker toppers tend to last longer simply because they can take more weight and are more resilient.
Toppers range in thickness between 1 to 5 inches. 1-3 inch toppers generally don’t last beyond two years before they need to be replaced. With good care, 4 and 5 inch toppers can last for up to 5 years.
So if you want a topper that will last longer, spend more money on a thicker one.
3. The state of the mattress
Most people mistakenly assume that a memory foam topper is enough to completely revamp an old mattress.
It’s true that a topper can make a mattress more comfortable. But it won’t be of much help if your mattress is already headed towards the end of its life.
If your mattress has sagged, your topper will sag too. It’s best if you invest in a new mattress.
Only buy a topper if your current mattress is too soft, too firm or too hot. Do not buy a topper to make up for a worn out mattress; it won’t last long.
4. Weight
Your weight also determines how long a mattress topper lasts.
If you fall on the higher side, the topper will wear out sooner. This is especially so if you share the bed with a larger-bodied partner.
I recommend buying a topper designed specifically for heavier and plus size sleepers. They are usually thicker (at least 3 inches) and use denser foam.
5. Care and maintenance
Finally, how well you take care of the topper will also determine its lifespan. Here are some tips to make sure your memory foam topper lasts for longer.
- Regularly rotate and flip the topper to even out the wearing. Do this every couple of weeks. This is especially important if you and your partner have significant weight differences. Otherwise, one half will wear faster than the other.
- Wash the cover and vacuum the foam regularly to keep the topper clean and hygienic. It’s also a good idea to occasionally air out the topper, ideally outside in the sun, to let it breathe.
When should you replace your memory foam mattress topper?
Your body will tell you when it’s time to replace your memory foam topper. You’ll start feeling the way you felt before you got the topper.
The mattress may start feeling too soft or too firm again and you may experience back pain and other aches when you wake up in the morning.
Another way to tell that your topper’s time is up is if has permanent dents. A good topper should go back to normal after you wake up.
If it shows a permanent depression in the middle or anywhere else, it’s time to get another one. A worn out topper will not offer enough support and could cause back problems.
